Start at Piazza del Popolo and visit the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Popolo. This early Renaissance church contains some of Rome’s finest art treasures, such as the frescoes by Pinturicchio and Bramante, a chapel designed by Raphael and completed by Bernini, and two paintings by Caravaggio. Afterwards, stroll down Via del Babuino, one of Rome’s premier shopping streets. Like its neighbouring streets, Via del Babuino is a glittering expanse of shop windows showcasing the most famous names in fashion and jewellery.

Next to the stylish fashion shops, you will find exceptional art galleries that retain an out-of-town atmosphere with hidden gardens and leafy pergolas. These streets, which once provided the backdrop for unforgettable movie scenes, are today synonymous with luxury and high society. Head to Pincian Hill and explore the Villa Medici, a 16th-century villa surrounded by a magnificent garden. Enjoy lunch in the nearby Villa Borghese, then walk to the Trinità dei Monti and descend the Spanish Steps to Piazza di Spagna.

Continue from where you left off the day before at Piazza Augusto Imperatore and see the Ara Pacis and the nearby Mausoleum of Augustus. Proceed into Via Condotti, another famous shopping street, and stop at Caffè Greco for a coffee. Cross the River Tiber and stroll around Trastevere, which is full of bars and restaurants. The Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere boasts magnificent 12th-century mosaics. In the evening, join the locals at Piazza Santa Maria, one of the centres of Rome's nightlife.

Spend a day at the Porta Portese street market, the largest and most famous in Rome, held every Sunday morning. There, you will find everything from antique furniture to shoes, from stamps to kitchen utensils. Take a break at midday and enjoy a thin-crust Roman pizza beside the river. No visit is complete without exploring the ruins of the Forum, one of the oldest sites in Rome, and the Colosseum, the most eloquent symbol of Imperial Rome’s grandeur.
