Located on the eastern shores of Lake Orta, this elegant four-bedroom villa is the perfect place for a stylish break by Italy’s most romantic lake. Nestled between Lake Maggiore and Valsesia, Lake Orta is surrounded by charming towns bathed in soft light. Luxuriant greenery and a wealth of flowers thrive in the mild climate, filling gardens that sweep down the lakeside. Higher up the hillsides are beech, oak, and birch woods, where a range of outdoor activities can be enjoyed.

Overlooking the forest-lined banks of the lake, the tiny village of Orta San Giulio has abundant charm. There is something magical about rising early and heading for a coffee in Piazza Mario Motta, gazing across at the sun-dappled Isola San Giulio in the early morning quiet. At the northern end of the square, which bursts with local life on market day, stands a fresco-adorned structure sitting atop pillars like giant stills— the Palazzotto, which was once the seat of a local council and now occasionally hosts temporary exhibitions.

At the centre of the lake, Isola San Giulio houses the stunning Basilica of San Giulio, founded in the 4th century. Inside the basilica is a large bone, which, according to legend, belonged to one of the terrible dragons San Giulio vanquished from the island. Beyond the lush gardens and residences that mark the hills rising behind Orta is a kind of parallel town, the Sacro Monte di San Francesco, where twenty small chapels dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, built between the 16th and 18th centuries, dot the leafy hillside.

The property is also a few kilometres from Lake Como, whose sparkling waters and stunning scenery have inspired poets and artists for centuries. These days, the fabulous villas for which the lake is famous are popular with celebrities. Explore the picturesque lakeside towns or pull on hiking boots and climb up to castles, mount a horse, or grab a mountain bike, and then cool down in the shady garden of one of the villas. The best way to admire the lake itself is from one of the ferries linking all the main towns on the shore.

The Property
Palazzo Sul Lago is a 17th-century mansion that was completely renovated in 2012, combining luxury materials with modern technology. All architectural details have been maintained, restored, and enhanced. It features original architectural elements such as wooden flooring, large fireplaces, and coffered ceilings. With its elegant atmosphere, Palazzo Sul Lago can comfortably accommodate up to eight guests, offering four double bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, spread across multiple floors.

The entrance leads, through a large gate, to a courtyard and a romantic garden adorned with columns and protected by walls. Additionally, there is a private beach for the exclusive use of guests, featuring two sun loungers and a canoe. The beach can be reached by car, approximately 10 minutes from the property. Enter the ground floor to find a modern, fully-equipped kitchen and dining room, a study, a guest bathroom, and a private spa with an indoor heated pool. All rooms on this floor lead onto the garden.

Upstairs, you will find a spacious living room with a TV, decorative fireplace, and coffered ceiling, a guest bathroom, and two bedrooms (which can be connected on request), each with its own en-suite bathroom. The first bedroom has a king-size bed, a decorative fireplace, and an en-suite bathroom with a shower. The second bedroom features a comfortable queen-size bed and an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub. This floor is accessible either from the back entrance of the house or via the stairs connecting all floors.

On the second floor, a beautiful porch with a vaulted ceiling connects two bedrooms and a music room, offering magnificent views of the lake, the Island of San Giulio, and Monte Rosa. Both bedrooms feature queen-size beds and en-suite bathrooms with showers. There is also a laundry room with a washing machine, dryer, and iron, along with a guest bathroom on each floor. The spa includes an indoor heated pool with a waterfall, hydromassage jets, chromotherapy, a Turkish bath, two showers, and a bathroom.
