VILLA VIGILIO - GARDA
9 Bedrooms
Location and Surrounding Area
Villa Vigilio is set in a prestigious location right on the shores of Lake Garda, just across the water from the town of Salò. Lake Garda is Italy's largest lake and there is a lot to see and do in this fabulous, celebrity-studded area. The nearby towns, such as Sirmione and Peschiera, are well worth a visit and they have been hosting cultural events for the rich and famous for decades. Pescheria is especially renowned for its sporting prowess. You can try your hand at sailing, water-skiing, canoeing, windsurfing as well as more ground-based sports such as walking, running, horse-riding and cycling.
Salò is a designer-shopper's paradise with many of the famous names in one small charming town. Once you get tired of the shops, take a walk along the famous promenade and head over to admire the frescoes by Angelo Landi or through the lovely historical centre for a quiet cup of coffee to watch the world go by.
You can wander around Padenghe sul Garda to see the medieval castle encircling the historical centre, climb up to the top of the castle tower and be amazed at the breathtaking views across the lake and surrounding hills, visit the 12th century Romanesque church of San Emiliano, sunbathe on the beaches along the shores of the lake or simply take a long walk along one of the ancient mule tracks, tasting freshly produced foods and wines as you go.
The local wines are notable. The Garda Classico can be either red, rosé or white but perhaps the most famous is the rich, red Garda Classico Rosso and the Garda Classico Superiore, all being certified with the Italian stamp of a quality DOC wine. The best gastronomic combinations that cry out to be tried are probably a Garda Classic with either red meat or game fowl or a local, seasoned cheese.
Villa Vigilio is less than 3 kilometres from the nearest town Garda, 20 km from Salò on the ferry across the lake, half an hour from Peschiera del Garda, 50 km from Padenghe sul Garda and about an hour from both Brescia and Sirmione. The international airport of Verona is about half an hour's drive and Bergamo international airport is about an hour and a half's drive.
The Property. Villa Vigilio is a stunning Liberty-style property dating back to the end of the 1800s. It was built by an aristocratic family of Scottish barons, the Mildmay family and has been in the hands of the present family since the 1950s. During its time, Villa Vigilio has seen a whole host of illustrious visitors pass through its doors: the King of Naples, Emperor Alexander of Russia, Prince Charles of England, Winston Churchill, the scientist Otto Hahn and the actors Laurence Olivier and Vivian Leigh to name but a few.
The villa sleeps up to 16 guests in four marvellous double bedrooms with breathtaking lake views on the first floor and five bedrooms each with a private bathroom on the second floor. The enveloping peace and quiet is guaranteed to lull you into the deepest slumber and you'll find superb, top quality bedding to caress you as you sleep.
The living areas are on the ground floor and are superbly decorated with enviable good taste. The grand piano adds an air of authentic flair and glamour. The formal dining room seats up to 16 guests or you could choose to dine romantically by candlelight on the lakefront terrace and watch the sun go down over the water. There is a fully equipped kitchen with plenty of preparation space including a central island and panoramic breakfast table.
The lower floor houses some amazing features to complete your stay. You'll find a heated, indoor swimming pool, a jacuzzi, a sauna, a gym, a home cinema room, a billiards room and a well-stocked wine cellar for your perusal. Another large kitchen with fireplace and the laundry facilities are also on this floor.
Despite the splendour of the interiors, much of your time here will probably be spent outside either admiring the lake, walking in the grounds, splashing in the infinity swimming pool or lazing in the sunshine around the pool. Everything at Villa Vigilio is designed to make you feel special and to make sure that you have the most wonderfully refreshing stay imaginable.
