VILLA VESUVIO - SORRENTO
6 Bedrooms
Location and Surrounding Area
Located near the heart of Sorrento, this elegant six-bedroom villa is the perfect place for a stylish break on one of the most famous stretches of coastline in the Mediterranean. With a spectacular cliff-top setting facing Mount Vesuvius across the Bay of Naples, it is no wonder Sorrento is a must-visit destination on everyone's bucket list. The ancient town center is laid out on a Roman grid of narrow lanes, now lined with exclusive restaurants serving gnocchi and shops selling lemon-themed souvenirs.
But away from the well-worn paths are little-explored nooks and crannies. The vaulted Sedile Dominova, once a meeting space for aristocracy, is now a working-men's club where old-timers while away afternoons playing cards. Then there are traditional greengrocers and haberdashers huddled behind wooden shop fronts, the medieval palaces along Via Pietà, the magnificent courtyard of Palazzo Correale, and artisan workshops producing the same wood intarsia for which the town became famous in the 18th century.
If Sorrento gets too much, the laid-back town of Vico Equense, which stands on a sheer tufa cliff just along the coast, makes an attractive base. Beach bums tend to head for the small pockets of sand tucked into coves at Marina di Vico and Marina d'Aequa, walkers tackle the old footpath to Positano, clinging to the cliffs on the Amalfi coastline, and culture hounds hop on the Circumvesuviana train to march around the ancient sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, destroyed by the eruption of the Vesuvius.
Set in the hills just below the ridge that divides Sorrento from the sheer southern coastline lies the village of Sant'Agata Sui Due Golfi, named for its domination of the gulfs of both Naples and Salerno. To the west and south-west of Sorrento is a hilly hinterland, the sprawling Massa Lubrense, and a wild stretch of coast that developers have left untouched. The Massa Lubrense is home to hamlets and ancient look-out towers, a reminder of repeated invasions over the centuries, surrounded by citrus and olive groves.
With a seeming maze of streets and staircases, Amalfi is a town best explored on foot. While Piazza Duomo and the main street are home to most of the town’s shops and restaurants, do spend some time wandering and exploring the quieter side streets, where you will find arched passageways, hidden gardens and tiny piazzas. Sitting high in the hills above Amalfi, Ravello is famous for its ravishing gardens and stupendous views, the best in the world according to former resident Gore Vidal.
Vista Vesuvio is a two-minute walk from the bus stop to Amalfi and Sorrento, a five-minute drive or twenty minute walk to the center of Sorrento and the station with direct trains to Naples Central Station, 15 km from Positano, 25 km from Pompeii, 32 km from Amalfi, 38 km from Ravello, 40 km from Herculaneum, 52 km from Naples and Naples Capodichino International Airport, and 270 km from Rome and Rome Leonardo da Vinci International Airport.
The Property
Perched high on a hill with spectacular views over the sea, Vista Vesuvio provides the ultimate retreat for those seeking complete privacy and relaxation in one of the most evocative corners on the Amalfi Coast. The recent renovations have maintained the original style of the property while skilled craftsmen have created a welcoming space using high-quality, locally-sourced materials. Vista Vesuvio can accommodate up to twelve guests featuring six double bedrooms with en-suite bathroom spread over two floors.
Surrounded by a lush garden, the villa boasts an exceptional pool and a poolside patio furnished with comfortable sun loungers inviting guests to sit back and unwind while enjoying the charming panorama. With gorgeous views of the sea, there is another sunbathing area on the roof of the villa, and a barbecue and wood-fired pizza oven near the outdoor dining area for rustling up some sizzling dinners. The whole property is fully fenced with an electric gate.
The open-plan living spaces on the ground floor are full of light and have far-reaching views from all of the windows. There is a comfortable living room with a flat-screen TV and access to the outdoor dining area, gardens and main terrace. The dining area has an antique table from the 1800s that seats 12 diners and is adjacent to the sleekly modern kitchen, which has everything you might need for recreating some delicious, authentic, Neapolitan dishes. There is also a handy seventh bathroom on the ground floor.
On the ground floor you will find three comfortable double bedrooms with en-suite bathroom with shower. Accessed by a short flight of steps, the first floor houses three double bedrooms complete with en-suite bathroom with shower. There are plenty of antique family heirlooms dotted about, like the writing desks, chests of drawers and gorgeous inlaid tables plus some original prints on the walls that date back to the 18th and 19th century. The bathrooms feature glazed majolica tiles in traditional colors from nearby Vietri.
